Spanish police said Monday they had intercepted a sailboat with 1.2 tonnes of cocaine on board in the Atlantic, southwest of the Azores, and three people were arrested.

The 18-metre (60-foot) boat under a Brazilian flag, which came from South America and was heading for the coast of Galicia in northwest Spain, was stopped in mid-July by a specialised team of police and Spanish customs agents.

Two Britons and a Dutch national were arrested, the police statement said.

Spain is one of the main entry points in Europe for illegal drugs coming from Latin America and north Africa.
