Spanish police detain suspect in murder of US woman
Spanish police have detained a man suspected of killing a 49-year-old American woman and then disposing of her body by cutting it up and throwing it into a river, they said Wednesday.
Police detained the 30-year-old Spaniard in the southwestern city of Seville on Monday and found blood stains during a search of his apartment, a police spokeswoman said.
The man knew the victim, a 49-year-old longtime Seville resident, she added without specifying the nature of their relationship or any possible motives for the murder or how it was carried out.
Police found a plastic bag containing the woman's head and one of her arms as well as some personal belongings and a suitcase with the rest of her body on Monday under a bridge over the Guadalquivir River.
The woman, who lived in the same Tiro de Linea neighbourhood in Seville as the suspect, had been missing since Saturday.
The police spokeswoman refused to confirm Spanish media reports that the suspect had confessed to the crime while in custody and then guided police to the spot where he had disposed of the body.
He had been facing a court summons for a previous, unspecified criminal offence, daily newspaper El Mundo reported.
Several of his neighbours told the online edition of regional daily Diario de Sevilla that the suspect had a history of violent behaviour.
