Spanish police arrest member of Basque armed wing
Spanish police have arrested a man sentenced in absentia to seven years in prison for belonging to armed Basque separatist group ETA, the interior ministry announced Saturday.
Police arrested Zugaitz Izaguirre Ameztoy, 29, in the northeastern region of Tarragona, the ministry said in a statement.
The National Audience anti-terror court had issued a warrant for his arrest after he was sentenced in absentia for belonging to an armed group.
ETA, listed a terrorist group by the European Union and the United States, is accused of killing 829 people in a 40-year campaign of bomb and gun attacks to demand independence for the northern Basque area.
The shadowy group has not carried out an attack in Spain since August 2009.
It is expected to announce a ceasefire in the coming months after rapprochement between its banned political parent, Batasuna, and the nonviolent Basque independence party Eusko Alkartasuna (EA) ahead of municipal elections next year.
