1 December 2005, MADRID — The leader of the opposition Mariano Rajoy narrowly escaped serious injury when the helicopter he was travelling in crashed.

MADRID — The leader of the opposition Mariano Rajoy narrowly escaped serious injury when the helicopter he was travelling in crashed.

Rajoy suffered minor injuries when the helicopter crashed as it was taking off from the city of Mostoles, near Madrid.

Rajoy heads the conservative Popular Party.

The mayor of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, was also in the helicopter at the time, but was uninjured.

The aircraft was taking off from a bullring when it suddenly crashed outside.

The co-pilot also suffered minor injuries.
