Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's office warned Friday the military will take over air traffic unless controllers return to work.

Under a law approved by cabinet the same day, the Defence Ministry would take over organisation, planning, supervision and control of air traffic if the controllers persisted in their action, it said in a statement.

"Defence will assume control of the air space if the controllers do not return to work," it said.
