Spanish police on Friday detained 13 people, including the mayor of the southern town of Alcaucin, as part of a probe into the illegal construction of villas on protected land, police said.

MADRID - Jose Manuel Martin Alba, who belongs to Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's Socialist Party, was detained along with several members of his family, police said in a statement.

Several real estate agents and lawyers specialising in property law were among the other people detained, the statement added.

In a statement, the branch of the Socialist Party in the nearby city of Malaga said it would expel any members who are under judicial investigation.

The arrests come as the main opposition Popular Party finds itself embroiled in a corruption scandal that has seen several people with ties to the party charged ahead of Sunday's regional elections in Galicia and the Basque region.
