MADRID- The Spanish economy grew by 2.6 percent in the second quarter compared with the same period a year earlier, according to new analysis from Spain's national statistics institute (INE).

The economy expanded by 0.6 percent on a quarterly basis, INE said.

On Wednesday, the International Monetary Fund said it was revising its 2005 forecast for Spanish growth down to 2.6 percent from 2.9 percent previously owing to higher oil prices.

The IMF maintained its forecast of 2.6-percent growth in Spain this year, 0.2 percentage points below that of the Spanish government.
