Authorities in Valencia say by offering an enlargement operation as the top prize in a lucky draw, the discotheque is promoting a sexist image of women.

MADRID – A Spanish discotheque Wednesday came under criticism for organising a prize draw with a breast augmentation operation as the jackpot.

The draw was to be held between visitors who paid EUR 20 to enter the discotheque in the eastern city of Valencia.

The discotheque justified the draw by saying there was a lot of demand for the operation which was worth EUR 4,500. "Most of our clients have had their breasts operated on," a representative claimed.

Such "repulsive" initiatives promote a sexist image of women and aesthetic values above more important ones, regional equality official Celia Ortiz said.

Spanish Health Minister Bernat Soria said the ministry was concerned about the growing popularity of breast operations among minors. The ministry will also launch an investigation into the affair.

The Valencia authorities said they will take legal action unless the discotheque withdraws its prize draw.
