Spanish Defence Minister Carme Chacon visited Afghanistan Tuesday and met with top US commander General David Petraeus, according to Spain's defence ministry.

Petraeus, the leader of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), thanked Chacon for "for the continued effort of Spanish troops", who are stationed in the west of the country, said a ministry statement.

Petraeus said ISAF would be able to begin handing over powers to Afghan forces in the coming months, the statement said.

After the meeting, Chacon met troops from Spain's 1,270-strong deployment, and presented a Spanish national football shirt signed by members of the World Cup winning team.
