MADRID — Spanish children are among the fattest in Europe according to a report by the European Commission.
Along with Italy and Portugal, Spain has the highest percentage of overweight and obese children, the report said.
In these countries, about 30 percent of those aged between seven and 11 have been diagnosed as overweight or obese.
In the European Union bloc of countries, there are thought to be up to 400,000 overweight children each year.
Adult obesity figures are rising too, with between 10 and 27 percent of men and 38 percent of women in the EU overweight.
The rate of obesity is said to be growing, according to the report.
Experts said Europe is catching up with the 65 percent obesity rate in the United States.
The European Commission is to ask countries to address the problem.
