MADRID – Civil guards have smashed an international gang which provided support activities for European criminals and among the 14 suspects arrested was the leader in Spain of the notorious Mazzarella clan of Italy’s Camorra crime family, authorities said on Monday.

In the operation carried out in Marbella, Malaga, Fuengirola, Zaragoza and Ceuta,  civil guards seized 60 motor vehicles, four businesses, seven properties worth a total of five million euros, weapons and 2.5 tonnes of hashish.

Police said the detainees from Italy, Spain and Morocco would be charged with 51 separate crimes including drug trafficking, falsifying documents and money laundering.

According to officials, the gang rented automobiles to Spanish and European criminals using false names and also provided boats for smugglers to run illegal drugs from Morocco to Spain.

Profits from these activities were laundered using phoney businesses set up by the ring.

A civil guard spokesman said the local leader of the Mazzarella clan, based in Naples, financed the drug operations.
