BEIRUT — The first deployment of Spanish soldiers arrived in Lebanon on Wednesday.

The 29 soldiers landed in Beirut on a reconnaissance mission to prepare a larger contingent that is to join the emerging UN peacekeeping force, the Defence Ministry said.

The soldiers will meet with officials of the existing United Nations peacekeeping force.

They may also visit areas where the other Spanish troops could be deployed.

The Spanish parliament is to vote next week on deploying up to 1,000 Marines to Lebanon.
