CASTEL GANDOLFO, ITALY — Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia have invited Pope Benedict XVI to come to Spain.

The Spanish monarchs invited the pontiff on a visit to his private summer residence near Rome.

King Juan Carlos said the 30-minute meeting was "relaxed and cordial," and Pope Benedict was "open, friendly, very lively and affectionate".

"He is more reserved than the previous pope (John Paul II), but he has a great sense of humor," Queen Sofia said after the audience.

King Juan Carlos said he invited Benedict XVI to visit Spain.
