BOGOTA-A Spaniard working for the European Union in Colombia was apparently kidnapped last week in the northeastern city of Cucuta.

EU and Spanish sources said Carlos Ayala Saavedra, described as in his 60s, was based at an European Commission office in Bogota and helped administer EU cooperation projects in the Andean nation.

While confirming that Ayala disappeared last week, EU and Spanish diplomats declined to provide any details or to offer any speculation on who might have abducted him.

Cucuta, the capital of the Colombian province of Norte de Santander, is located on the border of Venezuela in an area rife with violence from leftist rebels, right-wing paramilitaries and common criminals.
