A recent poll reveals 94 percent of Spaniards want the city to host the 2016 Olympics.

Madrid – A growing number of Spaniards back Madrid's bid to host the 2016 Olympics, and some three-quarters believe it will be successful, an opinion poll said on Wednesday.

Madrid is one of four cities, along with Chicago, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro, shortlisted as candidates for the 2016 Summer Games.

The International Olympic Committee will choose the host city in Copenhagen on 2 October.

The poll, taken in mid-May and published by the Madrid 2016 organising committee, said almost 94 percent of Spaniards want the city to host the Games, up two points from six months earlier.

It said 75.5 percent of Spaniards questioned believed the city - which was third in the race to win the 2012 Games - would be chosen, up 10 points from six months earlier.

The influential specialist Olympic newsletter "Around the Rings" said Chicago is the favourite to host the Games, though it added that Madrid looked to be the biggest danger, while Tokyo and Rio bring up the rear in a very close race.
