Spaniards rally against budget cuts in education
Thousands of parents, teachers and pupils Wednesday staged protests in Madrid against government measures to cut spending on education.
Demonstrators voiced their anger over measures adopted to reduce both the national and regional budget deficit, with banners proclaiming "Education is not a cost, it's an investment," and "No to privatisation."
Authorities in the Madrid region had asked secondary teachers to give two extra hours of lessons a week to cut costs.
At a national level, the socialist government has implemented a number of austerity measures to fight the crisis engulfing the eurozone including a five percent pay cut for public officials and a pensions freeze.
