BARCELONA — Sales of Catalan cava fell last year by 6.6 percent because of the boycott of Catalan goods by Spaniards upset at the region's autonomy bid.

Many Spaniards have chosen not to drink the sparkling wine because they claim the attempt by Catalan politicians to secure the region more powers will break up the country.

Instead, Spaniards outside Catalonia are increasingly drinking French champagne, whose sales rose by 36 percent last year.

But the figures, from Spain's Cava Regulation Board, also show that exports of cava rose by 6.3 percent in 2005.

Of all the cava produced last year, 58 percent went to markets outside Spain, principally Britain, Germany and the United States.

Exports also rose in Japan, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands compared with the previous year.
