MADRID – Spaniards hit the bottle more often than any other nation in Europe, a report released on Thursday claimed.
The European Commission survey found 28 percent admitted drinking five or more glasses of alcohol several times a week.
Austria came second in the drinking table, with 24 percent of the population confessing they drank the same amount as the Spaniards.
Monthly alcohol consumption in Spain went up 11 percent between 2003 and 2006, the survey found.
The only other nation were a larger rise was recorded was in Austria with a 13 percent increase between the same dates.
In recent years, concern has increased in Spain about a rise in youth drinking with the mass booze-up or ‘bottellon’ becoming a regular feature of weekends in Spain.
But Spaniards also said they were keen to see a clampdown on alcohol advertising directed at younger drinkers.
A draft law aims to stop such adverts in places where they might be viewed by minors, like on television, on the radio and in other media.
