30 September 2004, MADRID - Spain's trade deficit soared 24.9 percent in July to EUR 5 billion compared with a year ago, the industry ministry said on Thursday.

MADRID - Spain's trade deficit soared 24.9 percent in July to EUR 5 billion compared with a year ago, the industry ministry said on Thursday.

For the period January to July, the deficit hit EUR 31.7 billion, representing a year-on-year rise of 28.9 percent, compared with the same period in 2003, a ministry spokesman  said.

In July, imports surged 15.9 percent year-on-year while exports were up 12.7
percent compared with the same point in 2003.
