Spain's paramilitary Civil Guard seized 31 kilos (68 pounds) of heroin, one of the biggest hauls in recent years, and arrested five suspects, a statement said Saturday.

MADRID - Officers arrested three Bulgarians, a Turkish national and a Spaniard as part of the operation, said the statement from the Civil Guard.

"This is one of the biggest seizures of heroin made over the last few years in Spain," said the statement.

The drugs had been smuggled into Spain in a luxury car registered in Bulgaria, concealed in secret compartments built into one of the doors and the back seat of the vehicle, said the statement.

Investigators believed that drugs was intended for a Turkish national, based in the eastern city of Valencia, suspected of having links with a Turkish family involved in heroin trafficking, it added.

In 2008, Spanish police announced the seizure of more than 316 kilos of heroin from a yacht near the northeastern port of Barcelona.
