Spain's Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez Friday urged Egypt to move "quickly" towards democracy after president Hosni Mubarak quit following days of mass protests.

"The Spanish government considers the resignation of President Mubarek will facilitate a quicker transition towards democracy and will in this way meet the legitimate demands of the Egyptian people," she told a news conference.

"This is a key moment in the history of Egypt and we trust that the process of reforms that will begin now will include the country's various political actors and will allow its citizens to fully exercise their rights and freedoms.

"Spain is willing to assist, both bilaterally and within the EU, this process at the same time that it calls for the path towards democracy to be opened quickly, orderly and peacefully," she added.
