MADRID - Spanish police have detained 99 suspected members of an international credit card falsification ring which swindled a total of more than EUR 6 million from its victims, police said.

Twenty-six people were also held in other European countries.

The ring, many of whose members were Romanians, installed in bank tellers and shops equipment which copied information from credit cards when they were used.

The criminals then forged the credit cards and their owners' identity documents, police said.

The ring acted all over Spain, as well as in seven other European Union countries and in Turkey. The criminals were sometimes believed to have cooperated with shop owners.

Police searched 48 addresses, seizing about 800 falsified credit cards.
