GAZA — Spanish foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos announced two Spanish air force Hercules cargo planes loaded with 16 tonnes of humanitarian aid would leave for the United States.

At a press conference after meeting with the chairman of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Mahmoud Abbas, Moratinos said the planes would transport 6,000 food rations, personal hygiene products, tents, blankets, canvas cloth and miscellaneous good valued at 350,000 euros.

Moratinos said this first shipment was not dispatched earlier because of recent heavy traffic at US airports, and said a second shipment is being coordinated with Germany. According to diplomatic sources, it could include heavier material.

The Spanish Hercules are expected to land at an Arkansas airport on Wednesday, where they will be turned over to US authorities, Moratinos added.
