MADRID-Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos will seek a written promise from Britain not to send any more nuclear-powered submarines to Gibraltar for repair.

The moves follows the furore over the arrival of the British nuclear submarine HMS Sceptre for repairs at the colony.

Spain formally protested the presence of the submarine, which arrived last Thursday for maintenance to an external casing and a fin.

Repairs also were made to a diesel motor, but military sources said the work was unrelated to the ship's nuclear reactor.

A three-way meeting by representatives from Spain, Britain and Gibraltar was scheduled in Malaga Friday, with the Gibraltarian envoy for the first time taking part on the basis of equality.
