MADRID — Spain came to a standstill as millions turned their heads to the heavens to watch a rare moment without sunshine during the first such eclipse for oer 240 years.

Planetariums and opticians sold out of protective shaded glasses prior to the eclipse, when the moon will passed across the sun, the first such eclipse in Spain since 1764.

Ironmongers also reported a run on welders' masks, said to be adequate protection for directly gazing at the moon and its surrounding halo of sunlight.

The eclipse started over the Atlantic Ocean this morning and can then be seen in Galicia in north-west Spain.

It then travelled south-east over Madrid and Alicante and on to Africa.
