MADRID - Pepu Hernandez was sacked Tuesday as Spain's national basketball coach, following strong disagreements with federation president Jose Luis Saez.

Just two months ahead of the Beijing 2008 Olympics, Spain lost the coach that led the team to a world championship title in 2006 and to the final of the European championship in 2007.

Spanish online media reported Tuesday that the meeting between Hernandez and the federation coach lasted barely five minutes.

"They have sacked me without motive or reason," the coach said as he left.

Hernandez had announced recently that he would be leaving the national team after the Olympics. Saez did not like the move and accused the coach of not focusing hard enough on the task of winning the gold medal in Beijing.
