Spain jails ETA member extradited from Portugal

A suspected member of the armed Basque separatist group ETA whom Portugal handed over to Spanish authorities last week was jailed by a court in Madrid on Monday.

National Court judge Pablo Ruiz ordered Garikoitz Garcia Arrieta, 31, to be imprisoned for membership of a terrorist organisation, possession of weapons and explosives, car theft, document falsification and conspiracy.

Garcia Arrieta, who was the subject of a European arrest warrant, was arrested in northern Portugal in January along with another suspect, Iratxe Yanez Ortiz de Barron, shortly after escaping from Spanish police.

He was was handed over to Spanish authorities on Friday.

In mid-March, a third suspected ETA militant was arrested in Portugal following the discovery of hundreds of kilos of explosives.

Spanish authorities believe ETA has started to move its logistical operations from France to Portugal.
