Mohamed El Ouazzani, who escaped from prison near Rabat, was sent back to Morocco, says a police source.

Rabat – Spain has extradited drug baron Mohamed El Ouazzani, alias El Nene, to Morocco, where he escaped from prison in 2007, a police source said Friday.

"This dangerous drugs trafficker is currently in the hands of the police, awaiting his transfer from Casablanca to Rabat, where he will be presented before the prosecutor," the source said.

Arrested about 20 times in Morocco, El Ouazzani is considered one of the world's biggest international dealers in hashish, with a personal fortune of at least EUR 30 million.

The decision to extradite El Ouazzani, who arrived in the Moroccan port city on Thursday, was taken on 19 June by the Spanish government after Spain's supreme court threw out an appeal against extradition, the source said.

The drug baron escaped in December 2007 from the central prison in Kenitra, 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Rabat, where he was serving an eight-year term for drugs trafficking.

El Ouazzani, who has dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, was arrested on 22 April 2008, in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, under an international warrant issued by Rabat.
