Spain finds half-tonne of cocaine in banana shipment
Spanish police found more than half a tonne of cocaine hidden in boxes of bananas from Ecuador and arrested 11 suspects, an official statement said Thursday.
"The drug was hidden in sheets of plastic that covered the inside of the cardboard boxes containing the bananas," police said after the raid in the southern Spanish port of Algeciras.
The smugglers used fruit containers because perishable goods move faster through customs, they said.
Spain is the main gateway to Europe for cocaine from Latin America and for cannabis from north Africa.
