MADRID — Spain failed on Thursday to reach the final selection process to stage the Winter Olympics in 2014.
The Pyrenean town of Jaca vied to stage the Games, but failed for the fourth time.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) chose Salzburg in Austria, PyeongChang in South Korea and Russia's Black Sea resort town of Sochi as the three finalists.
The winner will be chosen on 7 July next year in Guatemala in a secret vote.
Other cities which entered the contest were Almaty, in Kazajistán, Sofía in Bulgaria and Borjomi in Georgia.
Jacques Rogge, the Belgian president of the IOC, announced the three finalists at a meeting in Lausanne in Switzerland.
"It is a question of quality, not quantity," he said, explaining why the IOC had cut down the number of finalists to just three.
The disappointment comes after Madrid failed to win the 2012 Summer Olympics, which was awarded to London.
