MADRID (dpa) - Spain extradited a man on Friday who is suspected of involvement in the murder of the governor of Russia's eastern Magadan region in 2002, police sources said.

Alexandr Zakharov was detained in July 2006 with a suspected accomplice in Marbella on the southern coast, where the two lived in luxurious villas in a neighbourhood favoured by foreigners.

Spanish Interpol representatives handed Zakharov over to their Russian colleagues at Madrid airport. The other suspect, who was identified as Martin Babakekhian, was not to be extradited for the time being.

The two are suspected of involvement in the murder of governor Valentin Tsvetkov, who was gunned down on a Moscow street, and of injuring the vice-governor who was accompanying him.

The criminals were believed to have been motivated by the governor's fight against crime.
