BARCELONA -- Spanish police Thursday detained eight people on charges of links with Islamist terrorism, police sources said.

The operation focused on the north-eastern region of Catalonia, where at least four people were held in Santa Coloma de Gramanet and Badalona near the regional capital Barcelona.

Other arrests were reported in Madrid and the southern region of Andalusia. Police searched several addresses.

The detainees were suspected of funding terrorist units. Police were investigating whether they also recruited fighters to travel to Iraq.

In January, 14 mainly Pakistani suspects were held in Barcelona on charges of planning attacks against the city's transport network.
