Spain congratulates Cameron as Britain's new PM
Spain's socialist prime minister on Wednesday congratulated David Cameron on becoming Britain's new premier and urged the two countries to work together to tackle major challenges globally and in the EU.
"I have the pleasure to convey my warmest congratulations... and wish your success in your new mandate as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom," Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said in a message to Cameron.
The message, released by Zapatero's office, said the Spanish government was committed to "deepening the excellent relations of cooperation and friendship" betwen the two countries.
"The challenges which international society, and in particular the European Union, are facing make it even more necessary that our two nations work together and in close coordination," said the message.
Spain currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.
David Cameron was named Tuesday as head of a new coalition government led by his Conservative party and allied with Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrats.
