Spain condemns killing of Israeli settlers
Spain on Sunday condemned the killing of an Israeli family of five in the West Bank and said it hoped the attack would not lead to an escalation of violence in the region.
"The Spanish government condemns in the most energetic terms the murder of five members of an Israeli family -- the parents and three young children -- in the settlement of Itamar in the West Bank at overnight on Friday," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
"Violence can never justify any type of political action. The foreign ministry hopes that this even will not lead to an escalation of violence in the region.
"The government welcomes the unequivocal condemnation of the murder on the part of the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad," the statement added.
Thousands of mourners flocked to Jerusalem's main cemetery on Sunday to bury three young children, aged four, 11 and three months, and their parents, who were stabbed to death as they slept in their West Bank settlement.
Israeli officials have said the attack was likely carried out by one or more Palestinians who broke into their home.
