Spain charity cleans up with lucky '11.11.11' lottery
A special lottery launched by a Spanish charity for the blind to mark the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011 cleaned up with all of its 13.5 billion tickets sold, organisers said Friday.
Long queues formed at lottery stands run by ONCE, a charity for the blind whose name means "eleven" in Spanish, in the hope that the numerical quirk of the date would prove auspicious for winning the 11-million-euro top prize.
Many found tickets for Friday night's special draw sold out and ONCE spokesmen said virtually all the tickets were snapped up for five euros each, meaning a total take of more than 60 million euros.
As well as the top prize, there are a further 11 payouts of one million euros plus other smaller winnings.
The takings will be shared out between the winners, ticket-sellers with disabilities and ONCE charitable projects.
