Spain calls for halt to 'repression' in Syria
Spain on Monday called for an "immediate halt to the repression" in Syria, describing the behaviour of Syrian authorities against their own people as "unacceptable".
"Spain condemns in the strongest terms possible the violent repression by the Syrian regime against its people for more than two months," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
"The events of this weekend in Jisr al-Choughour confirmed the regime's drift and are new evidence of the unacceptable behaviour of the authorities against the population.
"The repression must stop immediately and the Syrian government must allow access by international humanitarian organisations to its territory, in particular the International Committee of the Red Cross."
Syria's army, under fire for its harsh crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, seized the flashpoint northern town of Jisr al-Shughur on Sunday.
