MADRID – Spain has a total of 141,000 individuals with more than a million dollars, according to a study published Friday.
The country also boasts the second highest rise in new millionaires in 2004 – 8.7 percent more, compared to a European average increase of 4.1 percent.
Spain was only beaten by the UK, which saw an 8.9 percent rise in residents with big money.
The figures were released by American investment bank Merrill Lynch, working with consultant Capgemini.
The pair surveyed countries across the globe, considering rich residents to be anyone with a personal wealth totalling more than a million dollars on top of the value of their main home – wealth equivalent to EUR 817,093.
The newspaper ‘ABC’ put Spain’s boom in millionaires down to low interest rates which have led the country’s economy to grow at a faster rate than its European counterparts.
