ZARAGOZA — A father was in a coma on Monday after being attacked by his sons who caught him threatening their mother with a kitchen knife.
The 59-year-old, who has an order banning him from having any contact with his estranged wife, had been waiting for her near the door of her home just after 7am.
When she left for work, he attacked her with the knife, causing her light injuries.
Her cries woke up her sons, aged 25 and 17, who chased their father for 20 metres before they caught him.
They beat him so badly he was later taken to hospital in a coma.
The victim, who was not named, was being treated in the intensive care unit of the Hospital Miguel Servet in Zaragoza.
His two sons were arrested and remain in custody.
Police said it was not yet clear if the father had fallen into a coma as a result of the attack or the injuries sustained when he fell on the ground.
Domestic violence is a major issue in Spain.
This year alone 57 women have died at the hands of their partners.
