MADRID – A court ordered the arrest on Wednesday of the leader of ETA’s political wing who was due to stand trial.
Arnaldo Otegi, leader of Batasuna, claimed he had been trapped by heavy snow on the roads near Burgos while on his way to Madrid for the trial, which was due to begin on Wednesday.
But then it appeared Otegi had returned home to the Basque Country.
And the court heard there had not been any hold-ups on the roads at the area near Burgos where Otegi claimed to be.
The court ordered his immediate arrest.
He is accused with another man of glorifying terrorism in connection with a speech he gave at the funeral of an ETA prisoner.
Otegi was expected to appear in court in the early evening.
