MADRID – Passengers who travel for journeys of less than five hours on Spanish trains will be banned from smoking from next year, the minister of Development  Magdalena Álvarez said Wednesday

The state-run operator RENFE will introduce the changes from 1 February 2005.

The Spanish government is also to start courses to help smokers who might feel "anxious" if they cannot light up.

Álvarez said the move would bring an important "qualitative change" on Spain's trains which have long been criticised for being smoky and uncomfortable.

She said that the ban on smoking on the trains would give smokers some time to get use to the decision, before it came into effect to avoid "stress and anxiousness".
