BARCELONA – At least 16 people were injured Monday when the roof of a hospital waiting room collapsed.
One person was said to be seriously injured and others suffered cuts and bruises when the roof caved in above the gynaelogical unit of the Hospital de Sant Pau, in Barcelona.
The accident, which happened at about 10.50am, caused the floor below to cave in, showering people with debris.
Most suffered cuts and bruises but one other person was said to have suffered a number of fractures, according to hospital sources.
The roof which collapsed was being refurbished and there was scaffolding nearby which was not affected by the accident.
Twenty firefighters were involved in stopping more debris from falling from the roof.
Hospital sources said they hoped to discover the cause of the accident.
They added that they were carrying out refurbishment work on the façade of the roof even though this did not involve structural work.
The hospital is one of the oldest in Barcelona and parts of the refurbishment were designed by the architect Lluís Doménech i Muntaner.
