BARCELONA – In a joint operation, Spanish and Catalan police have arrested six men suspected of robbing casinos and other businesses on the Costa Brava and running a prostitution ring, officials said.

Investigations began in February 2006 when National Police linked one of the detainees, suspected of bringing young women from Eastern Europe and using threats to force them to work in bordellos in Girona, to a series of casino robberies in Catalonia.

At the same time, the Catalan police force was searching for a gang which had robbed several shops in Platja d'Aro and Palamós on the Costa Brava.

Authorities said the gang members entered the shops posing as customers and checked out the security measures, then returned several nights later to load up on merchandise.

Of the eight robberies blamed on the gang, most were of clothing stores.

The six are charged with robbery with violence, prostitution and aiding illegal immigration.
