MADRID-An investigation into alleged police corruption launched after an officer was shot dead is expected to produce arrests shortly, police sources said.

Jose Manuel Alvarez Pacios, who worked in Leganés, a suburb of Madrid, was shot dead with his own pistol on 5 January.

The murder happened  in Vicálvaro, in Madrid.

But the officer was not working at the time and was, in fact, allegedly taking part in an attempted kidnapping when he was shot.

Pacios and another, unidentified man, were said to have stopped a couple and tried to get them out of their car.

In the scuffle, the woman grabbed Pacios' gun and shot him.

The 39-year-old woman later gave herself up to police, telling officers their car had been stopped by two men using a police-style emergency light.

Her 40-year-old boyfriend appeared to be the target of the alleged kidnapping.

A fifth man was also involved in the incident.

It is thought Pacios was working with another officer with a Colombian drugs gang.

Miguel Angel Fernández Rancaño, head of the Madrid police, said this shooting appeared to have been an isolated incident and did not indicate widespread corruption.
