MADRID - Gambian authorities on Monday were continuing to search for survivors from a boat carrying undocumented migrants toward Spain's Canary Islands that sank off the coast of the tiny West African country on Saturday night.

Police said  seven bodies had been recovered, although around 20 people are still missing. The passengers had apparently paid the boat's Gambian captain €1,000 each to take them to Spain.

At least three other boats carrying 56 people reached the Canaries at the weekend.
