MADRID - In order to explore themes of prejudice, shame, death and traditions, seven male actors will be taking to a Madrid stage and, quite literally, singing their socks off.
The show in question is called Cantando desnudos!, originally an off-Broadway production called Naked Boys Singing from director Robert Schrock. Having opened in the late 1990s, the play continues to triumph in the United States, and will open today at the Teatro Arlequín in Madrid after a successful run in Barcelona.
According to Máximo Hita, the director of this new version, the work is a "minimalist" musical, in which each of its seven actors performs a sung monologue, accompanied by a solitary piano - oh, and they do it all in the nude.
"In the United States, the musical had a very gay tinge to it," he explains, saying that the Spanish version is "for all types of audience, because it's funny, sensual, but at the same time grotesque. The first thing they teach you in acting class is how to take your clothes off, so the actors are not ashamed at all."
