MADRID – A Brazilian who was convicted of raping 19 women in Madrid in some of the most violent sex attacks in Spain's history was jailed for over 300 years.
Juvenilson Dias de Silva, who was dubbed 'the Pozuelo rapist' after the town near Madrid in which he carried out some of the crimes, carried out the attacks between August 2000 and July 2003 and was following two girls when he was arrested.
Dias de Silva told the court he would seek help in prison to "improve as a person".
He also agreed to pay compensation of EUR 1.2 million in damages to the victims.
Dias de Silva will serve 20 years, the maximum term allowed in Spanish prisons.
The rapist had threatened his victims with long knives or flick knives and robbed eight of them of money and their mobile phones.
It has been reported that he also used the phones to send messages describing his attacks to the women's family and friends.
Dias de Silva, who worked as a decorator and lived in Madrid, carried out 12 of his attacks near the Madrid square Conde de Casal, another three in the area Carabanchel in Madrid and four in the suburb Pozuelo de Alarcon where he was finally arrested.
Despite the horrific attacks, Dias de Silva is only Spain's second worst serial rapist. Another serial sex attacker was regarded as more dangerous.
