Senegalese man falls to death in Spain during police raid
A Senegalese man died Tuesday in the Spanish seaside resort of Salou after falling from a third-floor apartment balcony during a police raid, sparking angry protests by migrants.
Police had carried out a dawn raid on the homes of three people suspected of selling pirated DVDs and other counterfeit goods on the streets of the resort just south of Barcelona, Catalan regional police said in a statement.
When police entered one of the homes, the 50-year-old Senegalese man tried to hide on the balcony of the apartment and then jumped to his death, a police spokeswoman added.
After his death about 100 African migrants clashed with police in the streets of Salou. They threw rocks and other objects at police, vandalised police cars and blocked a railway with debris.
Catalan regional police said they "regretted" the man's death.
