BILBAO – Security forces in the Basque Contry were on 'maximum alert'  on Thursday against a threatened attack from ETA in the wake of a series of arrests of members of the terrorist group.

Javier Balza, the Basque interior minister, said there was a "very real" threat that ETA were preparing to strike again.

His comments came after police arrested eight suspected members of ETA in the Basque Country on Wednesday and Thursday.

They also seized 30kg of explosives and a number of fire arms in the operation against an ETA cell in the separatist group's heartland.

One was named as José Angel Lerín, 36, from Pamplona, who has been wanted since the beginning of 2005.

He has previous convictions for street violence and attacking a police officer, for which was jailed for three years.

He was captured by police on Wednesday with a firearm.

In 1991, Lerin was arrested with others for setting fire to cars in the street as part of a political protest.

Later the same year he was arrested for attacking a police officer

The arrests took place across the Basque Country and in Avala.
