SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE – Searchers continued combing rugged terrain on the Canary island of La Palma on Tuesday for a British hiker who went missing last week, authorities said.

The 57-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was reported missing last Friday while hiking in the Caldera de Taburiente region

A civil guard spokesperson said the operation to find the hiker was complicated by the fact that the area was densely forested and so the search had to be carried out on the ground without the help of spotter planes or helicopters.

Along with civil guards, local police officers, Red Cross workers, national park rangers and civil defence staff were taking part in the search.
