Santander in surprise raid for Dutch bank

25 April 2007, MADRID - Banco Santander and a consortium including the British Royal Bank of Scotland and Belgium's Fortis launched a EUR 72 billion bid proposal on Wednesday for the Dutch ABN AMRO bank.

MADRID - Banco Santander and a consortium including the British Royal Bank of Scotland and Belgium's Fortis launched a EUR 72 billion bid proposal on Wednesday for the Dutch ABN AMRO bank.

The group Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander and Fortis said they planned to offer EUR 39 a share for ABN, comprising 70 percent in cash and 30 percent in RBS shares.

The move comes after an agreed takeover of the Dutch bank by Barclays Bank which was agreed on Monday.
